Things are changing. At a previous time you would need to lay out a lot to be in a position to make music.

The Net has grown over the last 10 years or so and has opened the world up to many chances, including free music software available to download within a few clicks. Some free desktop software is not just on the web, they’re also given away on magazine covers too. So that the possibilities are unlimited with many websites and web communities now appearing that dig into the arena of PC music composition.

Sequencers

Decent free sequencers are hard to find online, but do not be downhearted, if you can get a copy of a magazine broadcast in the UK called “Computer Music” there are essentially 2 of them on the cover CD as part of their Studio software collection.

Virtual Instrument and Effects plugins

This is an area that has exploded in the music world. Free virtual instruments and effects enhancements are everywhere on the internet. Even some of the big name developers have got in on the process of giving away some of their products.

I find that the best place to go for a reasonable plugin is KVR Audio. KVR Audio is a huge site with an online community as well as its gigantic database of Virtual Instruments and Effects extensions.

Audio Editor

There is only one audio editor that I might recommend, and that is’s insolence. Audacity is the most popular open source audio editor available and is pride of place in my audio setup.

So, there you have it. All of the information you have to start creating music while not having to pay for the software. Though, I would say you should truly purchase a more decent sequencer than a free one as they are much better and have more tools available.

But , then you may be the first one to ever get a triumph record using free desktop software alone.
