“Fame is empowering. My mistake was that I thought I would instinctively know how to handle it. But there’s no manual, no training course.

Born on August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana, Michael Jackson was the seventh child of the family of nine. They were six brothers and three sisters – Sigmund, Toriano, Jermaine, Marlon, Michael, Steven, Rebbie, Janet and La-Toya. He started his career by becoming the lead singer of the band Jackson 5, at the age of five. Jackie, Jermaine, Tito and Marlon were the other band members.

They played at local parties and clubs and also entered competitions which allowed them to grow as a band. They got their big first big break in 1968 when Bobby Taylor and The Vancouvers heard about the Jackson 5 and got them auditioned for Berry Gordy of Motown Records. They were signed immediately and they moved to California. “I want you back”, “The love you save” and “I’ll be there” were among their first few singles which became huge hits of America. They made fourteen albums with Motown till 1976 and Michael Jackson recorded four other albums. They later signed up with Epic and their group name was changed to The Jacksons, as Jackson 5 was the copyright of Motown. They made a total of six albums with Epic many of them being great hits until 1984.

Release Date: 16-OCT-2001Given the pace of Michael Jackson’s post-Thriller release schedule, it’s striking that Off the Wall appeared between two albums with his brothers, Destiny (1978) and Triumph (1980), on which the twentysomething phenomenon was also fully engaged. Aided by richly detailed but not overdone production, Off the Wall redefined how much Michael might do. Read the rest of this entry

Release Date: 16-OCT-2001″We wanted a tough album,” producer Quincy Jones recalls in a bonus interview on this special edition of Bad. Though the 1987 blockbuster would appear to be Michael Jackson’s most personal statement to date–9 of its 11 cuts were written solely by him–its appeal also rested more on craft than the idiosyncratic art of Thriller and Off the Wall. At the same time, most of Bad has aged well in spite of its digital brittleness and MIDI treatments of gems like Jimmy Smith’s organ solo on the title track. While the third best of his first three Epic solo discs, Bad carries a lot of what people love about Jackson’s music. This disc also benefits from two fine outtakes, the exciting, uptempo “Streetwalker” and the Carpenters homage “Fly Away.” Either could easily have extended the record’s run of hit singles. –Rickey Wright

Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana. Sadly, the world lost the man who was dubbed the King of Pop on June 25, 2009. Significant controversy seemed to grow with him as as an adult. Even his early days were said to be difficult with claims of abuse from his father.

In 1964 he debuted with the Jackson 5 and then struck out on his own in 1971. Throughout his career he won 13 Grammy Awards, had estimated sales of over 750 million records and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice.
