Do you realize how much popular culture affects your everyday goings-on? Chances are, you may have an inkling because of the general water-cooler talk and how it always seem to veer towards what was on television the previous night or what new music someone is into. If you actually took a pad and pen around with you and kept a record of what you talked about all day, you would see that popular culture has wormed itself into your life way further than you first believed. Chances are, you have funny t-shirts that are based on these popular culture topics.

We may not all agree on what type of music we like, but we all like music. Whether you listen to rap or country, music is a big part of everyone’s life. It soothes us, it helps us deal with strong emotions, and it can touch us deeply. There is no wonder that music has found itself into the complex maze of popular culture. There are far too many people who take what musicians say as gospel, even though many of them don’t even have a high school diploma. Despite not being anywhere near being qualified, people still consider these stars important enough to make funny t-shirts about their antics.

Movies, especially comedies, have a huge impact on the younger generations. These younger generations are also the people who are getting online and buying up all of these popular culture-inspired funny t-shirts. These shirts are usually inspired by lines from the movie that are particularly poignant, and some websites will push the issue by creating funny t-shirts as soon as the film comes out from lines that they just think will be popular.

Television is quickly taking over as the king of pop culture, and not for the right reasons. I honestly feel like we are experiencing a television renaissance with all of the excellent programming out there right now. At the same time, the reality programming is what has seemed to grab hold of the hearts and minds of people to the point of ridiculousness. Have you seen how many funny t-shirts are dedicated to “Jersey Shore?” If there is any show that should just disappear, it is most surely that one before our youth start believing that’s how people should act.

The least influential media category in this group are video games. Video games have been building a following since the first console was released in the 80′s. There have been entire generations growing up with video games, and you would surprised at how many households use games as their primary form of entertainment. It wasn’t until the past couple of years that we’ve seen a big surge in funny t-shirts about games, which may be a sort of litmus test as to their popularity.

You only have to look at funny t-shirts to get a judge of what movies, television, music, and games are the most popular at any given time. Media has a strong influence on us all, even if we’re aware of it. If some show that I love is mentioned in passing, I will spend time talking about it with a neighbor. I’m not sure if pop culture is a negative or positive thing on our society, but I do know that there is no way we’ll ever be rid of it.

On your next trip to Palm Springs and the California desert resort cities, be sure to stop by the iconic Melvyn’s Restaurant located at the Ingleside Inn in downtown Palm Springs. Considered one of the best bed and breakfasts in world and featured on “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” as well as “60 Minutes” Melvyn’s has been the frequented by everyone from Frank Sinatra to presidents and several royals.

These days the draw at Melvyn’s is “Dinner With” a monthly celebrity driven speaker series. Talk about an impressive guest list, you can rub elbows with icons. Now in its fourth year, this ongoing series has hosted some of Hollywood’s most notable celebrities including; Carol Channing, Stefanie Powers, Dyan Cannon, Margaret O’Brien, Tippi Hedren, Tony Curtis, Dick Van Patten, Elinor Donahue, Susan Stafford, Mickey Rooney as well as well known authors and musicians.

For over thirty five (35) years Melvyn’s namesake, Mel Haber, has owned the restaurant and the Ingleside Inn bed and breakfast in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. This historical site has been visited by the crme-de-la-creme of Hollywood. Over the years June Allison had her wedding reception at the Inn and Frank and Barbara Sinatra held their pre-wedding party at Melvyn’s to name just a few of the celebrity events that found a home at this iconic location.

Roll out the red carpet. Ingleside guests have included the “Who’s Who” of Hollywood. People like John Travolta, Marlon Brando, Clark Gable with Carol Lombarde, Bob Hope, Cary Grant, Patrick MacNee, Shecky Greene, Debbie Reynolds, Connie Stevens, Goldie Hahn and Virginia Madsen. Lily Pons and Andre Kostelanetz came to the Ingleside Inn for the night and spent the next 13 years there.

Today the “Dinner With” speaker series is the hot ticket in town with many of the guests appearing on local television. This is a complete package of good food and great entertainment. The meal itself consists of a three (3) course dinner for an intimate group of between 70 and 80. The diners can “meet and greet” the celebrity get autographs, take pictures and hear about life in Hollywood. The dinner starts at 6:00 p.m. followed by a talk from the celebrity guest and a lively question and answer period.

Currently slated for future appearance at the “Dinner With” series include Jack Jones, Norm Crosby, Ruta Lee, Ernest Borgnine, Julie Newmar and Connie Stevens to name just a few.

The night I went the cost for the event, including dinner, tax and tip was only $65.00, well worth it to meet one of my childhood favorites, Mickey Rooney, and have dinner at one of the most famous places in all the desert.

If nothing else stop in at the bar at Melvyn’s where you can see pictures of Hollywood royalty from days gone by. If those walls could talk they could write a best seller. The Ingleside Inn and Melvyn’s “Dinner With” speaker series is a must stop on your next vacation to Palm Springs and the California desert cities.
